We often get asked many questions about soy wax candles and how to get the most out of their soy candles. So we
have decided to put together a Frequently Asked Question's page to help clarify these questions.
+ What is Soy Wax made from?
Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soy bean oil. Yes the same soy beans used to make milk and yoghurt products!
+ Are Soy Candles safe to burn?
Soy Wax Candles are non-toxic, totally natural and bio-degradable. They burn cleanly with 95% less soot than paraffin candles and also cooler at a temperature of only 54C (paraffin is a dangerous 63C!).
+ Are Soy Candles toxic to burn?
No. Soy candles are non-toxic and the soy is derived from vegetables, rather than petroleum for paraffin wax. 99% of candles on the market are made from paraffin - a by-product of the oil refining industry. Soot given off from burning paraffin candles is the same as burning diesel fuel or fumes from a diesel engine. Tests show that paraffin candles can produce a variety of harmful substances, including benzene, toluene, - known carcinogens.
Soy Wax Candles burn cleanly with 95% less soot than paraffin candles.
+ Are Soy Candles evironmently friendly?
Yes. Soy Wax comes from sustainable and renewable agricultural resources. It is completely biodegradable and non-toxic. It is also water soluable and can be easily cleaned from glass, tin, fabric and other material for efficient recycling.
+ Why are the candle wicks short?
They are trimmed short when they are made in order to get the most burning hours out your soy candles. If they are cut too long, it produces a larger flame which burns the wax quicker, shortening your burning time. You should always keep the wick short every time you re-light the candle using a wick trimmer to a length of about 3-5mm long.
+ What if I spill my Soy Wax Candle?
Don't Panic! Let the wax harden, then scrape of the excess and clean up with hot saopy water.
+ Why don't Soy Wax Candles come in pillar style?
100% Natural Soy Wax can't be made into pillar style candles because of it's
low melting point and not so solid texture. Other ingredients, such as paraffin or stearic acid, need to be added to produce solid wax for votive/pillar candles. Many soy candle shops sell their pillar candle wax as "blended wax" and not as "soy wax." and therefore are not totally natural and non-toxic.
+ Why doesn't my Soy Candle have a smooth appearance?
Because we use Pure Soy Wax without additives, and each candle is individually and lovingly hand-poured, the top of your candle may not look perfect. This is how you know they are not mass-produced. Sometimes the top may appear rough, mottled or frosted or it may have come away from the glass. This does not mean that your candle is of a lesser quality, it is just a natural characteristic of the Soy Wax due to changes in temperature. Your candle performance won't be affected when lit.
+ Why has my candle not burned completely and I still have wax on the sides?
"Tunnelling" is a result of not allowing your candle to burn completely to the edge, or when it has been placed in a drafty area. You may need to burn your candle for 2-4 hrs before extinguishing to get a full "melt pool". Always allow your candle to melt to the edge of the container.
+ Are your candles"Triple Scented"?
There is no such thing as "Triple Scented". It is just a marketing gimmick. Soy Wax can only hold so much fragrance so there is a maximum amount that can go into any given candle.Too much fragrance will not soak up in the wax, but rise to the top and make the entire candle (not just the wick) flammable. Very dangerous! Our candles are not "triple scented" but they do have the maximum amount of fragrance possible.
+ Where should I burn my candle?
Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface away from any drafts.
